The Twin Buttes and Broken Arrow Loop is a thrilling hike with lots to see: the 90ft Devil’s Dining Room sinkhole, East Twin Butte, West Twin Butte, Gibraltar Rock, Lee Mountain, and more! The first half of this hike is quite easy, but the second half involves a bit of climbing and a walk right on the rim of a short cliff. It’s not great for those with vertigo or small children, but it’s a great adventure for those up to it. Expect moderate traffic on this hike.

Twin Buttes and Broken Arrow Loop Description

The Broken Arrow Trail is a classic for hikers, mountain bikers, and OHV-ers thanks to its stellar scenery. Combining this route with the Twin Buttes Trail makes for a stunning hike with some exhilarating sections. You’ll walk right on the edge of a canyon rim and get your legs working on a few short ascents.

This route isn’t the best choice for young kids or those who dislike heights. A part of the route follows right along the edge of a rim, so you’ll need to be surefooted to complete it safely. Additionally, bring plenty of water and plan for the hot desert sun if you’re hiking between May and October.

Beginning from the end of the road, hike down to where the trail splits. We recommend doing the loop clockwise as it’s easier to ascend the steep sections than try and downclimb them. Stay left onto Broken Arrow Trail, taking a moment to peer down into the 90-foot Devil’s Dining Room sinkhole. Stay right where the Broken Arrow Spur splits off and then loop around to the right onto High on the Hog Trail, which has great views. Stay right onto Twin Buttes Trail, which will take you back to the trailhead.
