Chapel Trail Description

Built in 1956, Sedona’s Chapel of the Holy Cross is one of the top man-made sights in the city, and the Chapel Trail begins at this landmark. The Chapel of the Holy Cross was designed by Marguerite Brunswig Staude and Frank Lloyd Wright, nestled into the Red Rocks on a hillside. With the dramatic cross on the exterior windows, the stained glass, the massive and intricate figure of Jesus, it’s obvious why this is one of the most visited sites in the city.

The chapel is 200ft tall, and its huge stained glass windows turn the interior into a kaleidoscope when the lighting is right. Although no services (other than a weekly prayer meeting) are held here, it’s a popular wedding location in Sedona.

The Chapel Trail is a perfect hike to take once you’ve explored the Chapel of the Holy Cross. This hike is short, easy, and family-friendly. It can be extended to a nearby viewpoint or used to access Little Horse Trail. However you enjoy it, you’ll love being able to look back at the chapel perched upon the rocks as you hike.

This hike isn’t wheelchair or stroller-friendly, but the chapel is.

The hike begins from the road that leads to the chapel at the trailhead parking area. Head east alongside West Twin Butte, gently descending before crossing the creek bed and hiking on a level trail with a nice view. You’ll hike to the base of Christianity Spire just in front of East Twin Butte, where the trail ends at the junction with Little Horse Trail.

From here, you can either turn back and retrace your steps or explore some easy extensions. If you turn left at the junction and hike around the southern base of Christianity Spire, you’ll reach Chicken Point, a viewpoint that features Gibraltar Rock.

You can also take Little Horse Trail in either direction for a longer adventure. We recommend downloading a map if you plan to do so.
