La Plata Peak Southern Approach Hike Description
Ready for a challenge? The La Plata Peak Southern Approach Hike is no walk in the park, but the incredible scenery proves to be well worth the effort. Reserved for experienced hikers, this trek demands stamina and preparation. As you will gain over 3281ft of elevation, it is important to be acclimated to the area’s altitude before your climb. We also suggest departing before dawn to reach the summit before noon, which will mitigate the chance of getting caught in a nasty afternoon storm. Additionally, microspikes and trekking poles are very useful as the steep terrain will likely be snow-packed and icy.
Embark on your adventure along the La Plata Peak Southern Approach Trail from the Black Bear Trailhead. From here, trek northwest along the La Plata Peak/Black Bear Trail. The initial segment of this hike will guide you briefly through a pine forest before graduating the treeline. Now traveling through the alpine tundra, you will be granted awe-inspiring views of the encompassing mountainous landscape. Mind your footing on the increasingly rocky and technical terrain as you near the summit.
Once you top La Plata Peak you will be in the company of other intrepid adventurers who took the northern approach up to the summit of the Colorado 14er. Revel in the sweeping alpine views from the peak and take some time to rest and rehydrate. When you are ready, retrace your footing along the path back to the trailhead.
