Shadow Mountain Dam Hike Description
The Shadow Mountain Dam Trail will immerse you in the Colorado wilderness. Hike through grassy meadows, wetlands, along the lake shore, and near the babbling stream. This route mildly undulates, but the limited elevation gain enables it to be managed by hikers of most skill levels. It is worth noting that the east side of the loop is more primitive and difficult to follow, so we suggest using the trail GPS to help navigate these tricky sections. Situated within the Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP), visitors are required to purchase a park pass.
Begin your adventure around the Shadow Mountain Dam Hike from the trailhead. The route can be completed in either direction, but we recommend tracking counterclockwise. From the trailhead, head north and at the junction, veer right and you will be guided into the Continental Divide Trail. Hike east along the path and at the intersection with East Shore, turn left. Hike north along the East Shore Trail through the wetlands and intersecting with Ranger Creek. As you hike, enjoy the sights of snow-dusted craggy peaks.
At the next junction, take a sharp left down the East Shore Trail. Trek south along the shore of the Shadow Mountain Lake. This path will ultimately guide you back to the trailhead, marking your adventure’s end.
