Five Lake Loop Trail Description

The Five Lake Loop Trail will leave you breathless, from both the altitude and breathtaking scenery. This epic excursion in the Rocky Mountain national Park is popular, so expect to share the path with fellow outdoor enthusiasts. Parking at the trailhead is limited, so it is worth considering taking the park’s free shuttle to avoid the annoyances of finding a spot. Don’t forget that hikers are required to purchase a park pass to utilize the network of trails.

Embark on your expedition along the Five Lake Loop Trail from the Bear Lake Trailhead. Take the Bear Lake Trail north to the junction. Veer right here onto the Bierstadt Trail. Hike up the rocky ridge and turn left onto the Fern Lake Trail. Hike this path to Two Rivers Lake and Lake Helene. From here, revel in the grandeur of Hallett Peak looming above. Continue tracing the Fern Lake Trail to Odessa and Fern Lake. Descend the forested route to The Pool and keep right, diverting onto the Cub Lake Trail. Travel this meadowed path to Cub Lake, keeping an eye out for grazing elk.

From Cub Lake, hook onto the Cub Lake-Mill Creek Basin Trail. Hike this route to Mill Creek and merge onto the Mill Creek Basin Trail. Trek this trail to Bierstadt Lake and hike the Bierstadt Trail until you meet the Bear Lake intersection. From here, retrace your steps down the path and along the shores of Bear Lake back to the trailhead.
