Walking the Winnats Pass and Cave Dale Circular is an amazing route in the Peak District that will expose you to wonderfully scenic views and several historic sites. While out on the trail, you will make your way through Winnats Pass, where several caverns can be explored to learn about the region’s mining past. From here, you will cross the countryside and descend Cave Dale for views of the 11th Century fortification Peveril Castle. You won’t want to miss this amazing journey through the picturesque Derbyshire!

Please note this area is seeing a significant increase in litter, illegal fires, off-lead dogs, irresponsible parking, and overcrowding. Due to this, we encourage you to consider visiting another area in the Peak District at this time or ensure you are respecting the rules outlined by Peak District National Trust during your visit.

Winnats Pass and Cave Dale Circular Trail Description

The Winnats Pass and Cave Dale Circular Trail is a popular walking route due to the fairly easy-going terrain, historic sites, and breathtaking views of the Peak District. The trail sets out from the heart of Castleton and heads west to pass Speedwell Cavern on the way through the rugged terrain of the pass. Once through, you will head south to cut across the open farmland terrain, before the trail turns east to descend the tranquil landscape of Cave Dale that is flanked by imposing limestone cliffs. Here, you will have some great sightlines looking onto the historic Peveril Castle, which has stood proudly over the Derbyshire landscape since the 11th Century. Continue making your way through the dale to eventually arrive back in the centre of the village where you began your walk.
