The journey along the Derwent Edge Walk to Back Tor and Lost Lad is a pleasant adventure that will produce some spectacular views overlooking the Upper Derwent Valley. With the exception of the short portion along the gorge, this trail largely follows a paved pathway, making travel relatively easy for walkers of almost every skill level - just be careful along the unpaved portion, as you might find going for a knee-high plunge into a deceptively deep puddle!
Getting there
To reach the car park for the Derwent Edge Walk to Back Tor and Lost Lad from Bamford, head north on Ashopton Road for 1.9mi and make a right turn onto the A57. After 1.0mi, you will find a layby on the left. If this is full, continue on for 0.2mi to find a car park on the right.

As mentioned above, the Derwent Edge Walk to Back Tor and Lost Lad is a popular trail due to the beautifully scenic views across the rugged Peak District landscape, as well as the paved pathways that make trekking across the moor a breeze.
Setting out from the trailhead, make your way north along Highshaw Clough for a short distance before branching off to the west towards Ladybower Reservoir. Reaching a junction with some nice views across the Derwent Valley, head north and continue along the Derwent Edge, taking in the scenic views until you arrive at the rocky terrain of Back Tor. Here, you will head right on the loop portion of the trail.
Follow it down into the gorge and make your way along Abbey Brook, before climbing back uphill to arrive at the hilltop site of Lost Lad. Here, it is said that a boy from the village of Derwent died after getting lost on the moor during a blizzard, and the site is marked by a memorial atop the hill. After arriving once again at Back Tor, take your original path to the right and follow it back to the trailhead where you began.
