The Kirknewton Hillfort Walk is a fascinating adventure in the Northumberland countryside that will take you to historical sites and scenic viewpoints. While out walking the trail, you will visit the Church of St Gregory with its famous carving of the Adoration of the Magi, before climbing up to the summits of St Gregory’s Hill and West Hill to explore an Iron Age hillfort. This is a great walking route for anyone with historical interests.

Kirknewton Hillfort Walk Description
If you are looking to explore the rich history of the Northumberland region while taking in the beautiful views across its rugged landscape, then the Kirknewton Hillfort Walk is the perfect route to do so. Be sure to keep your dog on a lead throughout this walk, as there will likely be some wild Cheviot Goats roaming around the hillside.
Setting out from the trailhead opposite the village hall in Kirknewton, you will make your way south and pass by the Church of St Gregory. Here, you can stop by to gaze upon a well-known ancient carving within the church, the Adoration of the Magi. From here, you will skirt around the western slope of West Hill, eventually arriving at the edge of a small wood near its base.
Heading to the west, you will make the short climb up to the summit of West Hill, where you will find the remains of an Iron Age hillfort overlooking the surrounding landscape. After taking in the views, make your way back down the hillside and pass through the wood, traversing the summit of St Gregory’s Hill on the return into the village where you started.
