The Crag Lough and Vindolanda Fort Loop is an amazing adventure in Northumberland that will take you to several historical sites featuring Roman ruins. While out walking the trail, you will make your way along the ruins of Hadfrian’s Wall for views over Crag Lough, before looping around to visit a Roman auxiliary fort that was occupied from approximately 85 CE to 370 CE. This is a spectacular walking route for those with an interest in ancient history.
Getting there
The trailhead for the Crag Lough and Vindolanda Fort Loop can be found at the car park next to the Twice Brewed Inn, in the village of Once Brewed.

Crag Lough and Vindolanda Fort Loop Description
If you have been meaning to explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hadrian’s Wall but want to tack on some extra sightseeing while doing so, then the Crag Lough and Vindolanda Fort Loop is a great way to do so without completing a much longer route.
Setting out from the trailhead in the village of Once Brewed, you will make your way to the northeast towards Steel Rigg, where you will climb up the rocky outcrop along a section of Hadrian’s Wall. Here, you will be able to explore the ancient ruins, in addition to taking in the sights of the picturesque Sycamore Gap Tree and the calm waters of Crag Lough.
After passing by the lake, you will follow the trail to the south and back across Military Road, looping around to the southwest in order to visit Vindolanda, a Roman fort, museum, and active archaeological site. Here, you will find the remains of a well-preserved fort that was occupied by the Romans from approximately 85 CE to 370 CE and offers a great window into the military and civilian life of the period. After visiting the site, you will continue onto the northwest in order to return to the trailhead where you began.,
