Lake 22 Trail is a 6.8mi heavily trafficked route in Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest that features a lake and is rated as moderate. This hike is a popular choice in the area and is best done earlier or later in the day to avoid the crowds. The trail climbs through a mature forest and wraps around Lake Twentytwo (22), making it a nice choice on a hot day if you want to dip your feet. Dogs can be brought on this trail but must be kept on leash.
Getting there
The trailhead for the Lake 22 Trail is located on Mountain Loop Highway across from the Hemple Creek Day Use Area. Park in the lot across from the day use area.

Lake 22 Trail Description
The hike on Lake 22 is a popular choice in Mount Baker-Snoqualmie, and for good reason. This moderate hike is doable for many skill levels, the lake is serene, and the forest leading up to the lake is mature and beautiful. There is a section of talus and the trail is overall fairly rocky, so we do recommend bringing poles and wearing sturdy boots for this trail. Otherwise, you’ll find this hike easy to follow. There tend to be wild blueberries lining the trail in late summer, which is always a welcome treat. This trail is popular in all seasons, making for an enjoyable winter snowshoe trek or a good way to enjoy the colours of the fall season.
The hike begins from the parking loop, which has restrooms if you need them. Depart to the right on the signed trail, following Lake 22 Trail as it roughly runs alongside the road. At Twentytwo Creek, the trail branches away from the road and begins to follow the creek. You’ll shortly cross the creek. There is a bridge to cross on.
Shortly after the bridge, you’ll enjoy a view of a small waterfall. Further on, near the end of a set of switchbacks, you’ll be able to spot another waterfall. The path curves through some very wide switchbacks, and nearly at the top of these, a nice viewpoint awaits. Note that at 1.7mi, there is a “slide” to hike. There is an obvious and easy shortcut you can take if this isn’t your style. While there isn’t a rope, there are lots of big roots you can grab onto if needed.
Winding through more wide switchbacks following the creek, you’ll soon arrive at the base of Lake 22. The trail loops all the way around the lake, so find yourself a nice spot to rest a while or eat a picnic lunch. When you’re ready to return, you’ll follow the same path in reverse back to the parking area.
