Manzanita Lake Loop Description

Depending on when you are planning on doing the Manzanita Lake Loop, the mosquitoes along the route can be numerous. Therefore – especially in the springtime – it is suggested that you bring bug spray and that you wear both long sleeves and pants to help protect you from the pesky bugs. Likewise, as the Manzanita Lake Loop is a popular route within Lassen Volcanic National Park, the trail can become rather crowded at times. As such, we recommend arriving earlier in the day or later in the afternoon to avoid the midday crowds.

If you are looking for a short route that is easily accessible and lacks much elevation incline, then the Manzanita Lake Loop is for you! Appropriate for beginner hikers and families with young children, the route simply takes you through a leisurely pathway that circumvents Manzanita Lake. Although not physically demanding, the route in no way sacrifices beauty, as the sightlines of the surrounding Lassen Volcanic National Park are both beautiful and humbling. The Manzanita Lake Loop is therefore an excellent choice for your next hiking adventure!

Once you have made it to the trailhead, follow the Manzanita Lake Trail as it makes its way south past the Loomis Ranger Station. Almost immediately you will arrive at a junction within the trail. As the route circumvents Manzanita Lake, you can choose to do the trail in either direction. That being said, we recommend circumventing the lake clockwise to cut down on congestion throughout the pathway.

At the first junction, take the northernmost pathway as it makes its way along the northern shore of Manzanita Lake. Having reached the northernmost tip of the lake, the route will veer south and follow adjacent to the western shore of the lake. After crossing a creek that flows into the river from the south, the Manzanita Lake Trail will head north, and begin to follow along the southeastern shore of the lake.

After passing the Manzanita Lake Campground and a picnic area, the trail will deviate from the shoreline and make its way east. The route will bring you over a bridge before arriving at the initial junction point. Here, you simply need to backtrack your steps past the Loomis Ranger Station to arrive at your waiting vehicle.
