Walking the Askham Fell Loop is a fun and beautifully scenic adventure in the Lake District that will allow you to visit historical sites and take in some stunning views. The trail begins on the grounds of the 19th Century Lowther Castle and climbs uphill to Askham Fell for amazing views overlooking Ullswater before returning through the village of Askham. This is a great walk for those with dual interests in history and beautiful scenery.

Getting there

To reach the car park for the Askham Fell Loop from Hackthorpe, drive northwest on A6 for 0.9mi and turn left to continue on for another 0.4mi. Continue onto Lowther and follow the road for 0.3mi before making another left turn. After 0.1mi, make a right and you will arrive at the car park in 0.2mi.

Askham Fell Loop Trail Description

The Askham Fell Loop is a popular walking route in the Lake District due to its beautiful scenery, historical points of interest, and relatively gentle terrain. While out on the trail, you will explore the extravagant grounds of Lowther Castle that began construction in 1806 before climbing uphill to reach the top of Askham Fell. Here, you will enjoy beautifully scenic views of Ullswater, with the rugged Heughscar Hill to the north. After taking in the views, you will skirt around the summit of Heughscar Hill and pass through the village of Askham to the east before following the River Lowther back to the trailhead.
