Walking from Ambleside to Tarn Foot Farm is an amazing Lake District adventure that will take you uphill to experience some of the best views that the region has to offer. The trail will take you from the town of Ambleside across the picturesque English countryside to climb up Loughrigg Fell for some breathtaking views of the surrounding fells, as well as Rydal Water and Grasmere below. This is a point-to-point trail, meaning walkers will need to either make arrangements in advance to be picked up at the end of the trail or walk back to Ambleside to reach the trailhead.

Getting there

To reach the Ambleside to Tarn Foot Farm trailhead from Windermere, head west on Church Street/A591 for 4.4mi and make a slight left onto Wansfell Road. After 0.1mi, turn right onto Rothay Road and follow it for 0.4mi, making a right turn onto Smithy Brow to arrive at the trailhead. Parking can be found throughout the town.

Ambleside to Tarn Foot Farm Walk Description

With a short but steep ascent of Loughrigg Tarn and lengthy stretches of open countryside to traverse, the walk from Ambleside to Tarn Foot Farm will feature a few areas that could pose a problem for less-mobile walkers. Be sure to wear decent walking shoes to stay comfortable on this undulating trail. As an additional note, you will need to make arrangements to be picked up at the end of the trail, otherwise, you will need to walk back to the trailhead in Ambleside.

Setting out from the trailhead, head west along the road to pick up the trail, following it along the banks of Stock Ghyll toward the River Rathay. Here, your course will turn to the northwest, following along the river at the foot of the hillside until you reach the edge of Rydal Water. Enjoy the scenic views across the lake, as you traverse the slopes of Loughrigg Fell in a westward direction, eventually coming to the edge of Deerbolts Wood along the shores of Grasmere. Here, the trail will turn to the south to make the steep ascent to the summit of Loughrigg Fell, where you will enjoy a commanding view across the hilly terrain of the Lake District. After taking in the views, follow the trail to the southwest to descend the hillside, passing through a sparsely forested area on the way to visit Loughrigg Tarn. As you approach the end of the trail at the Tarn Foot Farm Campsite, you will have some pleasant views across the small lake to wrap up your day on the trails.
