Pilot Baba Ashram hike

Take a bus from the Ratna Park Bus Stop to Surya Binayak. Get off at Doleshwor Mahadev Bus Stop. Head south from here and begin your trek on the asphalt-paved road. This section of the trail is quite busy with vehicles occupying most of the road. After walking for close to 0.6mi, you’ll reach a fork in the trail where just ahead of you sits the Surya Binayak Temple, one of the most important temples of Lord Ganesh in the valley. Visit the temple and offer your prayers.

Exiting the temple, take a right to stay on the trail and continue amid the forest, where you’ll catch a glimpse of the locals working the fields, goats grazing in the jungle, and other hikers trekking to the Ashram. The majority of the landscape is of terraced fields with high hills blanketed in dense woods. Although the hike is not too tiring, take occasional breaks and stay hydrated.

After walking for 2.0mi, you’ll reach a clearing with a lone tea shop at the edge of the trail. Stay for light snacks and tea while taking in the magnificent view of the valley. Next door is the entrance to the Pilot Baba Ashram. Pass through the gate and climb about 1804ft to get to the Ashram where you’ll have to pay a small fee of 25 cents to enter. The Ashram’s surroundings are very peaceful and offer all-encompassing views to the three ancient cities within the Kathmandu Valley: Kathmandu, Patan, and Bhaktapur.

When it’s time to go, descend the same way you came, making your way to Ghyampe Danda. Take a right after the gate and walk along a ridge surrounded by charming houses and stunning scenery. This 1.2mi hike to Ghyampe Danda is optional but is recommended as it offers comparatively better views with fewer travelers on the trail. Have your lunch at one of the restaurants at Ghyampe Danda and when you’re ready, carry on your way to board the bus back to Kathmandu from Doleshwor Mahadev Bus Stop.
