Upper Diamond Lake Hike Description

The Upper Diamond Lake Trail is a picturesque hike in the Indian Peaks. This hike will guide you to not one, but two shimmering alpine lakes. The trail itself is fairly moderate with gradual elevation gain and a few undulations before Diamond Lake. Additionally, there are many roots and rocks on the path, so mind your footing. If you want to make this trail a backpacking excursion, there are designated campsites around Diamond Lake with views of Mount Jasper. Stay there before continuing on to Upper Diamond Lake. Dogs are more than welcome on this trail, but they must be kept on their leash.

From the Fourth of July Trailhead, head northwest on the Arapaho Pass Trail. You will gently climb up the wooded trail until you meet a junction. Veer left onto the Diamond Lake Trail. Continue along this trail as it guides you down into a valley, passing a cascading waterfall. The path will intersect with another route, but stay on the Diamond Lake trail. Follow the trail to Diamond Lake and the Diamond Lake campground. Here you will be rewarded with breathtaking views of Mount Jasper. Enjoy the scenery as you hike along the north side of the lake.

The trail becomes more rugged at this point. Past Diamond Lake you will encounter an intersection, stay right as you merge onto Upper Diamond Lake Trail. The trail will become steeper and more exposed as you climb towards Upper Diamond Lake. Continue along this path until you arrive at Upper Diamond Lake. Dip your toes in the small alpine lake and appreciate the vistas before turning back and commencing your descent. To get back to the carpark, retrace your steps.
