Dunes Overlook and Sand Ramp Trail Description

Short, sweet, and scenic are three words often used to describe the Dunes Overlook and Sand Ramp Hike. This stunning trail into the Sand Pit picnic area reveals awe-inspiring views of the looming sandhills and the Sangre de Cristo peaks line the horizon. Note this path is exposed, so make sure to pack plenty of water and wear sun protection in the summer months. Additionally, you may want to consider wearing layers and eye protection if the wind picks up! It costs $25USD for 1-6 passenger vehicles to enter the Great Sand Dunes National Park.

Immerse yourself in the sandy terrain and rejuvenate your tired feet in the surging waters of Medano Creek along the Dunes Overlook and Sand Ramp Trail. This epic adventure departs from the Point of no Return Parking Lot and Trailhead. Setting out from here, track the Sand Pit Trail northwest. This path will gradually descend, leading you to the picnic area Medano Creek where you can take your shoes off and complete the rest of the walk barefoot!

At this point, you can hike further up the ridge of the sand dunes. When you are done exploring the sandy terrain, you can begin your return. To get back to your car, simply retrace your footing along the path back to the trailhead.
