Two Ocean Lake Trail

Immerse yourself in nature and take advantage of the opportunity for reflection along the Two Ocean Lake Trail. This secluded adventure along the forested shoreline of the glacial lake is one for the books. Progressing through such heavily wooded terrain near wetlands and meadows, hikers must be bear aware. Make sure at least one person has bear spray and knows how to use it and the procedure to follow. As you wander, make plenty of noise, and if you do encounter any wildlife, be sure to admire them from a safe distance!

While fairly easy-going, it is important to note that the Two Ocean Lake undulates as it progresses, so expect a few steep segments. Wear a sturdy pair of footwear to comfortably navigate the route and dress in layers as insurance against changing conditions. The mosquitos along this route are relentless, so wear an abundance of bug spray to avoid being swarmed. Note the Grand Teton National Park charges an entrance fee; refer to the NPS website for additional information.

Discover a diversity of flora and fauna and get a great workout along this hike. As you circumnavigate the glittering lake, the footpath passes through communities of aspens, evergreens, lodgepole pines, huckleberry bushes, shrub oak, and flowering meadows. Appreciate the variety of terrain and revel in the contrast of the snow-capped Tetons that frame the verdant lakeshore. Don’t forget to pack your camera; the scenery is postcard perfect!

Embark on your adventure along the Two Ocean Lake Trail from the trailhead off the Two Ocean Lake Road. Setting out from here, you can complete the circuit from either direction, but we chose to venture counterclockwise. Taking the rightmost Two Ocean Lake Trail, you will be guided northward through a dense tree stand before opening to a lush meadow. As you wander along the north side of the lake, you will weave between the tree canopy and exposed plains. Enjoy the gobsmacking views of the snow-dusted Teton Mountains looming in the west– notably Mount Moran.

Now traveling northwestwardly, you will also be granted lovely views of the shimmering pool encircled by lush vegetation. Keep an eye on the skies for birds soaring above the water, and be mindful of deer, bears, and mountain lions nearby.

When the path ultimately diverts southwardly along the southern shoreline, you will be diverted away from the water and further into the woods. In the spring, you will be rewarded with the scene of wildflowers carpeting the forest floor, and in the fall, you will be surrounded by the vibrance of changing aspens. Soon the path will lead you through a vast meadow where moose are often observed before delivering you back into the shade.

Enjoy the sporadic views of the shimmering glacial pool as you travel east, back towards the trailhead. Gently undulating beneath the tree canopy, you will eventually be led back to the trailhead and parking lot, marking the end of your tranquil adventure.

Two Ocean Lake

Two Ocean Lake is a glacially formed pool in the Grand Teton National Park that sits at an elevation of 6896ft. Named for the nearby Atlantic and Pacific Creeks, Two Ocean Lake only flows into the Pacific Creek. Framed by Moran Peak, the lake is densely forested and home to a diversity of flora and fauna. Ringed by a hiking trail, hikers of most skill levels can circumnavigate this charming glacial lake.
