This route details Surprise Valley Camp to Deer Creek Falls, a hike in the remote northwestern arm of the Grand Canyon. Finding yourself in some of the lesser-visited parts of the Grand Canyon can be a magical experience. Imagine those views all to yourself! The hike from remote Surprise Valley Camp to Deer Creek Falls is good for backpackers for its two camps on the way. You’ll need to hike into the trailhead, so add this to your plans should you be staying at Surprise Creek.

As with all hikes in the Grand Canyon, prepare for the changeable weather with layers and sun protection. Having lots of water or a filter on hand is always recommended, as is offline navigation.

From the trailhead, hike northwest between Cogswell Butte and the mesa to the north. You’ll follow a creekbed to the mouth of a dramatic canyon. Here, take a left to head down the canyon to the river. Deer Creek Campsite is along this trail. Continuing down the very last few feet of the canyon, you’ll arrive at the river where the falls are. From here, you’ll retrace your steps to the trailhead.
