The Soap Creek Trail is an 8.3mi out and back hike in Grand Canyon National Park that is rated as moderate, but consider it moderate with an asterisk. This hike requires good climbing skills, rope or webbing, and the knowledge of how to use them. There are intimidating boulder descents and ascents where you’re quite exposed, so we recommend this route for hikers who are comfortable with hands-on climbing and rappelling if necessary. Families, find another route! Expect light traffic.

Soap Creek Trail Description

Soap Creek Trail is one of the most interesting and uniquely challenging trails in the Grand Canyon. This route descends into a far-north arm of the canyon to the Colorado River alongside Soap Creek. On the way, it requires you to first downclimb and then ascend large boulders and climbing sections. These boulders can be house-sized in parts, so we recommend this route for hikers with climbing experience. Bring webbing or plan to rappel.

This route can be very dangerous if you’re underprepared. There are sheer drop-offs near some of the unforgiving climbing sections. Skip this one if you’re on the fence, but enjoy its one-of-a-kind terrain and challenges if you’re feeling well-prepared and capable of making the trip. Route finding can be a real challenge, so keep one eye on your GPS.

From the trailhead, the route approaches the gully and the problems begin. Make your way through each section carefully, continuing through this gully until it reaches the Colorado River, destined for the rest of the Grand Canyon. The climb up is just as interesting, so carefully ascend each section back to the trailhead.
