The Hell Roaring Creek Trail is a fun, and at times challenging, adventure in the Elk Mountains that will take you uphill along a rugged ridge. While out on the trail, you will gain over 2625ft of elevation, as you make your way past Hardscrabble Lake and above Williams Lake on a ridge that offers sweeping views of the surrounding area. Hikers should take note that if you are planning on making it all the way up to the trailhead, you will need a 4x4 vehicle.

If you are looking for a real leg-burner of a hike that features non-technical terrain and sweeping views across the Elk Mountains, then the Hell Roaring Creek Trail will be the perfect route near Aspen for you to explore.
Setting out from the Capitol Creek Trailhead, you will make your way uphill to the west, climbing through the forest as the trail bends to the southwest. Here, you will pass by several small lakes, including Hardscrabble Lake, as you continue working your way uphill along a ridge.
Eventually, the route will begin to steepen more dramatically and bring you up to an elevated point above Williams Lake. Here, you will enjoy spectacular views of the surrounding Elk Mountains, before heading back down along the same trail to return to the trailhead.
