Corfe Castle to Swanage Walk

While the majority of the Corfe Castle to Swanage Walk is fairly easy and straightforward, there are some sections of fairly steep terrain as you ascend and descend the Purbeck Ridge, which will increase the difficulty level for beginner adventurers. Be sure to wear proper walking boots and bring walking poles to help with stability along the steep slopes. Additionally, there will likely be a number of other outdoor enthusiasts along the trail including cyclists and trail runners, as well as a fair number of livestock. Keep your dog on a lead to avoid any interactions.

Even with the steep inclines along the route, this is an exceptional adventure that will really showcase the beauty of the Dorset landscape. In addition to viewing the imposing Corfe Castle on its hilltop perch, you will enjoy sweeping views that stretch out across the undulating Dorset landscape towards the English Channel. What a lovely way to spend an afternoon outdoors!

Setting out from the car park, you will make your way to the northeast and pass through the charming streets of the Corfe Castle village, while taking in the views of the impressive 11th Century ruins of Corfe Castle standing proudly on its hilltop. From here, you will continue on to the northeast in order to make your ascent on the East Hill of Purbeck Ridge. Take a moment here to look back to the west and enjoy an amazing view over the castle ruins and the village nestled snugly below.

From here, you will make your way to the southeast and traverse the elevated terrain of Purbeck Ridge, enjoying sweeping views across the Dorset landscape before descending into a gap in the ridge. After a brief walk along Ulwell Road, you will once again climb uphill to the northeast to traverse the final stretch of the ridge along Ballard Down and Studland Hill.

Taking a path on the right that leads downhill, you will make your way along the coastal terrain and pass by Shep’s Hollow, before passing through the town of Swanage on the way to the end point of the route. Once you have arrived at the railway station, you can take your preferred method of transportation back to the trailhead in Corfe Castle, although the Swanage Heritage Railway is by far the most scenic option.
