Thatched Tavern and South West Coast Path Description

With picturesque views overlooking the English Channel, charming seaside villages, and lovely country pathways, it is hard to truly fault the Thatched Tavern and South West Coast Path; however, at only 1.4mi in total length, one could argue that it just isn’t long enough! If you are planning on attempting this lovely adventure, you should make sure to wear comfortable walking shoes, as there are some steep portions of trail that might be uneven underfoot.

Even though it is only a short walk, it is a wonderful adventure with fantastic views that should absolutely make it onto your list if you are planning a trip in Devon. The route begins and ends at the Thatched Tavern, which conveniently allows for both pre and post-walk refreshments if you so wish. From there, you will make your way towards the water’s edge and walk along the picturesque coast, before looping back through a charming stretch of countryside terrain. This really is a relaxing walk that can be enjoyed by anyone.

Setting out from the Thatched Tavern, head to the southeast for 0.1mi to pass through a car park and onto a footpath, where you will eventually arrive at a junction. Heading to the left here will take you down to Maidencombe Beach, which you will likely want to save for later. Take the path on the right and keep left along the trail for the next 0.4mi, passing through a lovely stretch of forest that offers intermittent views across the English Channel on your left.

The trail will eventually turn to the west and bring you to a junction, at which point, you will turn left and continue to follow it south along the undulating terrain of the coast. Follow the trail as it once again turns away from the edge of the water toward the west and climbs uphill through the forest. Reaching a junction, take the path on the right and follow it for a short distance until it turns into a lane. Continue straight along the road for the next 0.6mi, where you will arrive back at the pub having completed your journey along the Thatched Tavern and South West Coast Path.

  • Good walking shoes are a must, as there are steep and rugged sections along this trail.
