Northam Burrows Circular Walk

While the Northam Burrows Circular Walk is a fairly easy adventure that shouldn’t pose too much trouble even for beginner walkers, there are a few portions of the route that go off trail. Make sure to wear good walking books, as the terrain in these sections might be a bit rugged. Additionally, the location of this trail right along the coast means that it is exposed to the elements. Bring an extra layer of clothing, as it might be windy or rainy on the day of your walk.

If you enjoy walking in picturesque coastal settings, then this will be the perfect route to get you out on the trails for a bit of relaxation and exercise. While out on the walk, you will traverse several types of coastal terrain, including rocky beaches, sand dunes, and grasslands, all while enjoying stunning views that extend out into the ocean. With little difficulty and such breathtaking views, there is no reason why you shouldn’t make this walk a priority if you find yourself along the North Devon Coast.

Setting out from the car park, make your way north along the edge of the beach and enjoy the views across the Bristol Channel, with the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean further afield. Working your way through a beautiful, yet rugged landscape composed of rocky beaches, sand dunes, and coastal grasslands, you will arrive at the northernmost point of the trail at the mouth of the Taw Estuary. Here, the trail will turn to the east along the coastline, passing by the Greysands Beach on your left to arrive at a small peninsula.

After exploring the peninsula, continue along the coastline until the footpath transitions into a road, following it south along the water’s edge to arrive at a stone bridge. This portion of the walk will be off the trail, so turn to the west and make your way across the peaceful grassland terrain, charting a course towards the car park where you began your adventure. Depending on how far south you stray, you might come close to the golf course that borders the park, so try to remain aware in case any stray golf balls come your way. After traversing the coastal grasslands, you will arrive back at the car park, at which point, you can either head to the beach, walk over to the visitor centre to learn about the unique ecosystem here, or simply make your way home having completed the Northam Burrows Circular Walk.
