The walk to Leather Tor via the Merrivale Car Park is a fairly straightforward but rugged adventure that will lead you across the heart of Dartmoor National Park. While out on the trail, you will traverse the undulating landscape of the park along an abandoned tramway and experience beautifully scenic views from several vantage points atop a number of tors. This is a great day walk if you are looking for a bit of a challenge without going overboard.
Getting there
To reach the trailhead for the Leather Tor via Merrivale Car Park Walk from Princetown, head northwest on Tavistock Road for 1.4mi and turn left onto B3357. You will find the car park on the left in 0.6mi.

The Leather Tor via Merrivale Car Park Walk is a fun trail across the moor that will provide some stunning views, but also a good bit of exercise as you traverse the rugged terrain of the moor. Setting out from the car park, you will make your way south along the abandoned tramway to traverse the surrounding moorland terrain, eventually passing through the Foggintor and Sweltor quarries. From here, you will continue south to skirt around Leeden Tor and cross over B3212, where you will begin the climb uphill to the summits of Sharpitor and Leather Tor. After taking in the beautiful views of the surrounding landscape, head back along the same trail for the return leg of the walk.
