The Ford Cove to Shingle Spit Trail is a 3.7mi out-and-back hiking route on Hornby Island that cuts through Mount Geoffrey Escarpment Provincial Park to provide views of the coast. Along the trail, hikers will make their way along a beautifully forested trail that follows closely along the water’s edge and allows you to explore the landscape around Ford Cove. Make sure to stop in at the food truck near the trailhead for some delicious fish & chips after your hike.

Getting there

To reach the Ford Cove to Shingle Spit trailhead from the Hornby Island Ferry Terminal, head northeast on Shingle Spit Road for 1.7mi and turn right on Central Road. After 3.7mi, turn right to stay on Central Road for another 2.9mi, where you will find the trailhead on the right.

Ford Cove to Shingle Spit Trail Description

Hiking the Ford Cove to Shingle Spit Trail is a great way to get out and explore the natural beauty of the smaller islands that can be found just off the east coast of Vancouver Island. Although you will need to take a ferry to reach Hornby Island, the journey is well worth the effort, as there are some truly beautiful views to experience along the trail.

Setting out from the trailhead off Central Road, follow the path to the north and head left when you reach a junction in the trail. From here, you will make your way through an amazing stretch of forest that will take you from Ford Cove to the ferry terminal where you arrived on the island. Take some time to enjoy the breathtaking forest atmosphere and beautiful coastal views along the trail before retracing your steps back to the parking area where you began your hike.
