Wilhite Trail Description

The Wilhite Trail is a fantastic route for experienced hikers in the Island in the Sky District of Canyonlands National Park. The crux of this trail is a steep descent into the canyon wash that needs to be ascended on the way out. This drop is strenuous; we recommend bringing hiking poles to aid with stability and save your joints some strain. As with any hike in the desert, arrive prepared for a big day in the sun. A good sunhat, lots of water, and salty snacks are absolutely necessary on this route. The challenging nature of the Willhite trail is a deterrent for the main tourist crowd. If you are looking for a hike to enjoy some peace and solitude in the Utah desert, this is a fantastic route for you.

From the trailhead, follow the cairns westward to the canyon’s edge. Then, begin the steep descent by following the switchbacks down into the wash. Continue hiking the wash until you reach White Rim Road.

The junction with White Rim Road marks the end of the Wilhite Trail. From here, turn around and follow your footsteps up the wash and out of the canyon back to the trailhead.
