Conveniently located in Aspen, you will likely be trekking in the company of other like-minded outdoor enthusiasts. Though short, the terrain up to the summit of Red Butte is technical and steep, so it is not suitable for younger children. Additionally, sections of the route are narrow with dramatic drop-offs, so stay on the worn path! Though not recommended, if you do bring your pup, be sure to keep them on a short lead. Demanding stamina, adventurers will be required to scramble up the shale, so take your time and mind your footing to avoid a rolled ankle of injury!

As you climb up the rocky red-hued terrain you will be motivated by the impressive mountain views, including sights of Colorado’s mountainous wilderness and the bustling city of Aspen. This is a popular route, as it provides the perfect opportunity to watch the sunset and sunrise. Pack provisions and sit atop the rocky peak overlooking the breathtaking landscape. In the east, you will also be granted sights of Red Mountain, otherwise known as Billionaire Mountain, where you can revel in the grandeur of the mansions etched into the mountainside. If you are looking for a quick adventure near Aspen, then we cannot recommend this excursion enough.

Embark on your adventure along the Red Butte Trail from the trailhead off Cemetery Lane. If you have a vehicle, you will have to park at Henry Stein Park then walk along the Cemetery Lane Trail to the trailhead. Departing from the trailhead, hikers will be guided northwest through the sagebrush and up the southern slope of Red Butte. The initial segment of the trek travels along a dirt path through meadowlands, before transforming into a more technical and rocky climb. Take your time as you ascend the route and enjoy the views along the way.

As you continue uphill, you will have to navigate the red colored shale leading up to the summit. From the peak, you will likely be in the company of other adventurers appreciating the vistas. If you have provisions, choose a comfy spot to eat and admire the views. On a clear day, you will be granted sights of Pyramid Peak in the southwest, and will also be able to notice the ski resorts below and adventurers enjoying the slopes. Revel in the sweeping vistas and, if you have headlamps, watch the sunset from here. When you are ready to descend, retrace your footing along the path back to the trailhead or parking lot.
