Norton Lakes Hike Description
The Norton Lakes Hike is a remarkable adventure in the Sawtooth National Forest that exhibits the majesty of Idaho’s mountain ranges. While the payoff is worth it, the climb up to the lakes is tiring, and the consistent grade is a calve-burner. Bring plenty of water and wear a comfy pair of footwear. Note that this route is lightly traveled, and oftentimes, felled trees obstruct the path, so come prepared to do some creative maneuvering. Additionally, we highly suggest bringing a towel and swimsuit—the turquoise-hued waters are quite tempting.
Embark on your journey along the Norton Lakes Trail from the trailhead off Norton Creek Road. Setting out from here, you will escape into the open canopy of towering evergreens as you contour the curves of Norton Creek. Alternating between open meadows and shaded tree stands, the intense climb will relax as the consistent grade becomes more gradual. As you travel further into the wilderness, sights of Norton Peak will come into view, rising above the treeline. After some hiking, you will eventually reach the shoreline of Lower Norton Lake. Admire the beauty of the crystalline waters, then tackle the final push up to the Upper Norton Lake.
From the shoreline of Upper Norton Lake, you will be mesmerized by the scene of the towering bluffs that surround the alpine pool. Take a refreshing dip in the refreshing waters framed by Norton Peak, then head back down the route the way you came, all the way to the trailhead.
