While the name is uninspiring, the Scab Lake Trail is actually a beautiful adventure in the Wind River Mountain Range. More commonly used as a backpacking route, we ventured this lovely trail as a day hike, and we loved it! If you aren’t afraid to break a sweat, you will likely enjoy it too.

Scab Lake Trail Description
Enjoy not one but several lakes along the Scab Lake Trail. This expedition into the Bridger Wilderness boasts incredible views of the Wind River Mountains commanding, so make sure you charge your camera. While the elevation gain is not astronomical along this trail, you will definitely get your heart rate up; thus, plenty of water and energizing snacks are necessary. Dress in layers and wear sun protection as much of this route is exposed. Note mosquitos are relentless, so bug spray is a must! While unlikely, bears have been spotted in the area, so make sure at least one person in your group carries bear spray.
Setting out from the Scab Creek Trailhead, your adventure follows the rightmost Lowline Trail, heading northeastward. From here, you will have to navigate a vertiginous section of terrain, but don’t let it discourage you; it will soon plateau! The first few miles of your hike travel through dense woodlands, passing numerous small ponds. After some hiking, the path will level, and you will be redirected southeast. Beyond this point, you will mostly be hiking through open meadows and granite gardens, motivating you with great views of Wyoming’s mountains.
Passing Toboggan Lake and Little Divide Lake, you will merge onto the Sage Trail, passing the Divide Lake and, subsequently Monroe Lake. Ultimately you will arrive at Scab Lake—marvel at the beauty of the encompassing landscape and the charming lake. Enjoy the scenery, then retrace your steps back to the trailhead.
