Alta and Bajada Loop Description
The Alta and Bajada Loop in South Mountain Preserve is a pretty circuit hike that follows a ridge with excellent views of the unique landscape of the preserve below. You’ll climb atop the ridge, savor the views, and then descend through the valley to the trailhead. This trail is one of the lesser-known ones in the preserve, so you can sometimes score some solitude if you’re lucky. This route is good for intermediate hikers and better. It’s not a great pick for families or beginners.
This is a longer hike with very little shade available, so prepare accordingly by packing more water than you think you’ll need, wearing sun protection, and wearing good boots. If you bring dogs, bring water for them, too.
From the trailhead, you’ll climb up to the ridgeline and ascend gradually and consistently along this ridge. At the fork, stay right to descend off the ridge. Take care, this is a steep descent. Poles might be helpful. Bear right twice to hike along the far side of the valley, eventually crossing the road to return to the trailhead.
