Bear Lake via Emigrant Wilderness Loop Description
Hiking this trail makes for an epic workout. Wander through mixed conifer forests, along snowmelt streams, and to the glittering lakes. As this path travels along the uneven granite terrain, we suggest wearing a sturdy pair of footwear. Pack plenty of water and snacks to stay fueled, and make sure you are acclimated to the area’s elevation. Much of this route stretches through exposed terrain, so make sure you check the forecast and prepare accordingly. Though not necessary, the trail GPS comes in handy as there are many route changes!
Setting out from the Crabtree Trailhead, the Bear Lake via Emigrant Wilderness Loop follows the Crabtree Trail south, gradually climbing through the thinning forestlands. Eventually, you will encounter an intersection; veer right here, and you will be diverted down a switchback to yet another junction. Here, keep left and merge onto the Bell Meadow Trail. Wander this path through Pine Valley to Grouse Lake. Continue hiking, connecting with the Groundhog Meadow Trail at the next trail fork.
Soon you will reconnect with the Crabtree Trail, heading west past Lily Lake to another junction. Turn right onto the Bear Lake Trail and hike up to the scenic lake. Enjoy the picture-perfect scene, then retrace your steps back along the path, reconnect with the Crabtree Trail and hike northwest along this path all the way back to the trailhead.
