Independence Townsite Description
The Independence Townsite is a great historical site to explore that exhibits the history of high country living in Colorado. With several interpretive signs explaining the historical significance of the structures, including an old ore processing mill, there is so much to learn as you wander along the dirt paths. Located in the river valley near Independence Pass, you will also be rewarded with breathtaking alpine views. Situated at such a high elevation, this site is inaccessible in the winter months.
Once you reach the site off of State Highway 82, you can choose to explore the grounds in whichever direction you prefer. Note there are no trail markers, but the sites are all located very close together. From the parking lot, we chose to venture all the way south, passing the log remains of cabins. From here, the route heads west, looping around the barn, mill, and several other structures before diverting east.
Explore the townsite and revel in the wonderful alpine views of the bounding snow-dusted peaks. Return to the parking lot when you are through exploring.
