Difficulty Rating:
The Blew By Peak trail is a subsection of the East Mesa Trail that leads up to an unassuming, but gorgeous viewpoint overlooking Mystery Canyon. This hike is relatively flat and can be a great hike that the whole family can enjoy. This trail to Blew By Peak has very little shade, so wear a good sunhat and bring lots and lots of water.
Getting there
This trail begins at the East Mesa Trailhead. The East Mesa Trailhead can be accessed by following an unmaintained access road or via a $5 shuttle service. If you choose to drive your own vehicle, take a left up the North Fork Road approximately 14.5mi east down route 9 from Springdale. Follow the road for 5.4mi then turn left onto Pine Angle road and follow it northwest to the trailhead. This road is unmaintained and only recommended for high clearance vehicles. Parking is also very limited at the trailhead, so we recommend saving yourself a headache (and saving your vehicle’s suspension) and just taking the shuttle service.

East Mesa Trail to Blew By Peak Description
The East Mesa Trail to Blew By Peak is a gorgeous sunny hike that is fun for the whole family. The peak gets its name from hikers “blowing past” it on their way to Observation Point, but rushing past this overlook is a mistake: the views from the peak are absolutely gorgeous. Keep in mind that there is little-to-no shade and there are no water sources along this hike so bring good sun protection and more water than you think you’ll need. This trail is relatively flat and is well maintained.
From the East Mesa Trailhead, follow the off-road trail westward into the forest. After approximately 2.0mi, you will see a trail branching off to the North. This is the Mystery Canyon Trail. Do not wander down this trail- it leads to a highly technical canyoneering route that descends down into the Canyon. Just past this spur trail you will reach Blew By Peak. Stop here to rest and enjoy the stunning views of the canyon below.
If you want to extend your day exploring along the East Mesa Trail, the path continues for another 1.2 miles to the iconic Observation Point. If you are ready to call it a day and get out of the sun, turn back and follow the same trail back to the parking lot.
