Horsethief Canyon Trail Description

Horsethief Canyon Trail is a simple out-and-back to an unforgettable vista. This route is very short, but worth the slight detour from town or the Royal Tyrrell Museum. It can be very busy, so try to head here in the morning or evening.

Even though this trail is as simple as a walk down the street, it is a definite highlight when visiting Drumheller. This trail is accessible for all and makes for great photo opportunities.

From the parking area, follow the easy to find trail to the canyon lookout point for 1312ft. The flat and simple trail to the Horsethief Canyon is manageable for all hikers. The canyon is named after the old western outlaws who hid their stolen livestock deep in the canyon over 100 years ago. If you make your way along this path to the lookout point, try to transport yourself to the wild western history that took place right here in the canyon.

Turn around at the lookout point and return to the parking area on your way back.

Insider Hints

  • Stop here after a visit to the Royal Tyrrell Museum for some fresh air and photo opportunities.

  • Bring some snacks and enjoy the views for a while before turning around.

  • If you are feeling adventurous, follow the rough and steep trail down into the bottom of the canyon to explore.
