Birchen & Gardom’s Edge Trail Description

While the majority of the Birchen & Gardom’s Edge Circular Walk follows well-maintained and easy to navigate paths, the northernmost stretch of the circuit is often wet and boggy, particularly after a good rainfall. Make sure to wear proper walking footwear and check the trail conditions prior to setting out for your walk. If you are looking to spend some extra time exploring the extensive trails that can be found in the area, you can camp at the Eric Byne Campsite that is located right in the centre of the trail loop.

Setting out from the car park, follow the trail north as it works past the Robin Hood Inn and climbs uphill to the top of Birchen Edge. From here, walk along the edge of the escarpment and take in the amazing views of the surrounding moorland terrain and farms, before arriving at Nelson’s Monument. Built in 1810 to honour Lord Nelson, the pillar stands in close proximity to ‘The Three Ships’, a series of rocky outcrops that resemble ships and have the names of three of Nelson’s ships carved into them.

After taking in the views, continue north along the trail until you come close to the road, at which point you will head west. Reaching another escarpment known as Gardom’s Edge, follow it south and take in some more spectacular views overlooking the beautiful Peak District before once again descending the elevated terrain on the approach to the Robin Hood Inn where you started.
