Prepare for lots of steady climbs and descents on Munns Road and you’ll be rewarded with fantastic ocean views. If you want to test your endurance, stop by the Mount Work area where you can throw in a hike between peddling sessions.

Getting there

From downtown Victoria, follow Yates St. Then, turn left on Government St. Continue to Wharf St., turn right. The 900 Wharf Street City Parking Lot is on the left-hand side.

Route Description for Munns Road Loop

Set out on the Galloping Goose to Thetis Lake bike ride from downtown Victoria at the Greater Victoria Visitors & Convention Bureau. Set out heading left on Wharf St., and onto the bike path on the Johnson Street Bridge. Note that most of this ride follows a dedicated bike trail, though some street riding in bike lanes is required.

Turn right almost immediately past the bridge onto Harbour Road, following the trail along the water, onto Galloping Goose Trail. Follow the path until you reach the split for Selkirk Trestle bridge, crossing over it to remain on Galloping Goose Trail.

Head through quiet residential neighbourhoods, making your way past Cecelia Ravine Park. Continue into a slightly busier section of the city, passing small storefronts and local businesses.

Follow the Galloping Goose Trail as it runs underneath the Trans-Canada Hwy, then bends to the left onto a bridge running parallel to the highway. Note, this path is also shared with pedestrians so give way.

Continue along Galloping Goose Trail, crossing over Interurban Rd. You’ll pass Portage Inlet on your left, where you can get pretty views over the water and possibly canoes and kayaks gliding by. Once you reach Camden Ave., take a right. Once the road ends, turns right onto Helmcken Rd., then almost immediately left onto Burnside Rd W.

Follow the road as it twists upwards, then take a sharp right onto Prospect Lake Rd., which will eventually turn into Munn Rd.

Once turned onto Prospect Lake Rd., there is no shoulder, nor on Munn Rd. itself. Munn Road is a challenging ride as there are lots of hills, it’s amazing for training. There is no shoulder for much of it, but the trail follows through small rural countryside roads for most of this stretch.

Continue climbing until almost the end of Munn road then there is a long delicious descent before the right turn onto Millstream Lake Road.

Millstream Lake Road is very narrow, so be alert and watch for oncoming cars. Push onwards over lots of climbs and descents.

Eventually, the road turns into Ross Durance Road. If you have time, consider stopping at the Mount Work Parking area and hiking the 1.3 km down to McKenzie Bight for amazing views of the ocean. This would be a good place to stop for a picnic.

Peddle onto Willis Point Rd., which is a busier, bigger road with more traffic, but it does have a good shoulder. Enjoy a blissful, long descent down Willis Point Rd., then onto Interurban Rd. Take this until the path reconnecting with the Galloping Goose Trail and retrace the path back to the parking lot.

Insider Hints

  • The Munns Road Loop is more technical and has higher elevation than most of the trails we recommended above. This trail is more for intermediate bikers, who have a good grasp of the road rules, as much of this path doesn’t have a shoulder.
