Difficulty Rating:
Bend’s own “A-Line”, Lower Whoops Trail is the quintessential downhill flow trail of the area. You’ll find plenty of mountain bikers on this trail, but it’s easy to see why. With a chill logging road climb and fantastic berms and tabletops to huck on the way down, it’s easy to spend all day cycling Whoops.
Getting there
There are many options to reach the base of Lower Whoops Trail. Most people will park at Phil’s Trailhead and take either Kent’s or Ben’s trail to the base. See those trail’s respective descriptions for more information. The other option is to go directly to the base of the logging road climb, however this is a dirt road. To get here take Skyliners Rd west out of Bend. After 5.3mi out of town you will turn left onto the National Forest Road number 300 (NF-300). Follow this road for a short while until you reach the obvious parking area.

Route Description for Whoops Loop
From the NF-300 parking area continue down the dirt road for a short ways. Soon you will see trail signs for Ben’s Trail on the left. Here you should turn right and start heading up NF-310, listed as the climbing trail for Lower Whoops. This very level dirt road is sometimes shuttled, so watch out for trucks.
After a bit of cardiovascular exertion, you will reach the ‘Helicopter Pad,’ a wide trail junction at the top. Here you’ll find a bench and a few small features to mess around on. Rest up here and drop your saddle to prepare for the awesome descent awaiting you!
Directly downhill to the right of the climbing trail is the Lower Whoops Trail. The first 299ft or so of the trail are fairly mellow, but don’t be deterred as it increases in grade — and fun — shortly.
Massive berms and formidable table top jumps of varying sizes await you. Don’t worry, as all the jumps are not required and can easily be rolled over. If you’re a slower rider, keep your ears open for the speedsters coming down behind you, and kindly pull off to let them by. If you’re a speedster, give slower riders a chance to move aside.
You will rarely have to pedal on this trail, however that doesn’t mean it isn’t a workout! Controlling your bike at high speeds, and pumping through the jumps and berms can definitely be exhausting! Finally, you will reach the bottom, slightly further along NF-300 than where you started your ascent. Rest up here before deciding to do another loop.
Insider Hints
Try combining this trail with Ben’s Trail beforehand, and Phil’s or Kent’s trail afterwards. This long circuit has tons of variety and is sure to please everyone!
Knee pads and other armor is strongly recommended for those traveling at considerable speeds.

I really had a lot of fun on the Whoops loop. You really want to try to go faster and faster. But I had to remember there were others on the road. Nearly crashed into one who was quite slow and took all the road for himself. Luckily all went well.
