Hiking the Cable Mountain Trail starting at Stave Spring is a less-travelled trail up to the Cable Mountain viewpoint. This overlook offers beautiful panoramic views of the valley below. The remnants of an old cable system give this trail both its name, and a dash of historical intrigue.

Cable Mountain vis Stave Spring Description

The hike up Cable mountain from Stave Spring is a secluded, low-traffic hike that leads to a beautiful view of the main valley. The final access road to this hike is not maintained, so hikers will need a four-wheel and/or high-clearance vehicle to access the trailhead. Parking is limited at the Stave Spring Trailhead. This trail can be quite muddy in the spring and fall, especially at the beginning of the trail and especially after a rainstorm. Most of this hike travels through high chaparral forest, but it opens up into stunning views of the valley below. This trail is a lovely walk through a bushy biome and is suitable for folks looking for a quiet day away from the hustle and bustle of some of the more popular paths in Zion National Park.

Starting at the Stave Spring Trailhead, follow the path westward for 0.5mi to where it intersects with the East Rim Trail. Take a left at this intersection and follow the East Rim Trail south for 0.3 when the trail divides into two. At this divide, take the right-hand path: this is the Cable Mountain Trail. Approximately 1.0mi later, the Cable Mountain Trail will divide in two. Stay on the right-hand path here to head northwest up to Cable Mountain. The trail goes on for another 1.8mi and will begin to gently descend as you reach the overlook.

At the overlook, hikers will see the remains of an old cable system that was used to lower timber down into the valley back in the early 1900s. Unfortunately, this cable system is not maintained and is no longer structurally sound, so please exercise caution while examining this industrial artifact. The overlook itself offers a beautiful view overlooking the Virgin River and Angel’s Landing. Snap a few photos, and enjoy a rest up here before you turn and follow the same trail back to the car.
