Pothole Dome Hike Description

The Pothole Dome Trail is a wonderful adventure in Tuolumne Meadows that presents the perfect opportunity to get the whole family out into the fresh air. Stretch your legs and challenge yourself as you scramble up the smooth granite dome that protrudes from the meadowlands. Note: the granite outcrop is extremely slippery after rainfall, so be sure to exercise caution or save this hike for another day! The National Park charges an entrance fee; check out the NPS website for the pricing guide and additional information.

Setting out from the trailhead, the Pothole Dome Trail treks briefly through the meadowlands along the path until you reach an obvious intersection. Veer left here to begin your climb up Pothole Dome. As you are scrambling up the granite outcrop, be sure to use your discretion on how to tackle the monstrosity. Take your time and mind your footing, and you will soon reach the top of the Pothole Dome.

From atop the granite dome, you will be granted 360-degree vistas of Yosemite’s dramatic landscape. Revel in the views of Tuolumne Meadows and the Sierra Nevada granite peaks that line the horizon. When you are ready, carefully descend the dome and retrace your footing along the path back to the trailhead.
