The Howard Eaton Trail is a fantastic way to see the beauty of Yellowstone National Park. This trail can be done as a long day-hike or an overnight backpacking trip by camping at one of the Wrangler Lake Campground. The Howard Eaton Trail is moderately challenging but not recommended for families with children.

Getting there

This hike begins at the Fishing Bridge Visitors Information Center on East Entrance Road and ends at the Wapiti Lake Trailhead on South Rim Drive.

The Howard Eaton Trail Description

The Howard Eaton Trail is a fantastic way to see Yellowstone National Park. This trail is long; if you plan to hike the whole distance in one day, make sure you start early in the morning so that you don’t wind up finishing in the dark. Wildlife, including bears, are commonly seen along this route. Before heading out, ensure that everyone in your hiking party is familiar with bear safety protocols. At least one member of your hiking party should carry bear spray and know how to use it properly. With over 13 miles of trail to explore, the Howard Eaton Trail is a wonderful way to experience the beauty and wonder of Yellowstone National Park.

Beginning at the Fishing Bridge Visitors Center, follow the trail north along the east bank of the Yellowstone River. 11.0mi in, just past Hayden Valley, the trail will divide. Take the path on your right, then stay left to make your way to the trail’s end at the Wapiti Lake Trailhead.

If you’re not too tired after your hike, check out the Upper Falls, Lower Falls, and Crystal Falls Trail to catch some incredible views of the Yellowstone Falls before heading home for a well-deserved rest.
