Getting there
This hike begins at the Blacktail Trailhead on Grand Loop Road and ends at the Eagle Creek Campground on Jardiner Road near Gardiner.

Black Canyon via the Blacktail Creek Trailhead is a gorgeous trail in the northern section of Yellowstone National Park. This is a long hike; if you are planning to hike the whole distance in one day, be sure to start your day early and bring a headlamp and an extra layer just in case you wind up finishing in the dark. Lots of snacks and lots of water are essentials for this route. We recommend bringing a water filter or water treatment system along with you so that you can refill your water bottles along the way. With over 12.0mi of trail to explore, the Black Canyon via Blacktail Creek Trail is an excellent way to spend quality time in the Wyoming/Montana wilderness.
Beginning at the Blacktail Trailhead, follow the path along Blacktail Creek up to Crevice Lake. From the north shore of Crevice Lake, follow the trail along the Yellowstone River for 6.0mi, then take the trail on your right and head up the switchbacks to the trail’s end at the Eagle Creek Campground on Jardiner Road.
At the trail’s end, you can either pack up and head home or set up your tent at the Eagle Creek Campground for a well-deserved rest under the starry Montana sky.
