Volterra Loop hike

The Volterra Loop is a classic walk in Tuscany, with fine views, finishing at the pretty town of Volterra.

From the trailhead take the gravel road left as it continues to descend with fine views on right. After about 0.6mi you go through a section with some interesting rock features on the hills on either side of the road. At 0.8mi the road splits. Go left, signed to Agriturismo San Giacomo, 1640ft later the road splits again, continue left, and go left, don’t go to the Agriturismo San Giacomo; in fact, at the next three intersections always veer left.

Just after the Agriturismo, the views to the left are spectacular. As you turn a corner, you’re on the ridge top and the views in both directions are amazing.

The road now drops down to cross a small river at 2.7mi. The road rises out of the valley and you will pass some fine views. At 3.9mi from the start of the Volterra Loop, and after a long straight stretch, with trees on both sides, the road comes to a junction. Go to the hard left here. It feels like you are heading back the way you came. Parts of this road appear to be an old stone road. Where the road splits at 4.0mi take either way, they both reconnect in 66ft. This next section on the ridgetop continues to offer incredible views in all directions. At 5.3mi there’s a road going off to your right, don’t take that but continue on your main track. At 5.7mi you will reach a road intersecting from the right, continue to the left. While on the road there are absolutely incredible views on both sides, this is a highlight of the Volterra Loop walk.

At 6.7mi, just past the road coming in on the left, continue straight on the road you’re on and there is an interesting sculpture on your left. Continue along this trail. The views as you approach Volterra are spectacular: looking ahead to the ancient town or to the countryside. Stay on main road as you come into town. At 9.3mi you will come to a stop sign and a sign to go left for Volterra. At the roundabout below the town go right then cross the road and take the first left, which is signed as Porta Etrusca, then head up to a gate on a straight paved road. Go through the gate and straight until you hit the main street in Volterra. Go left on the main street to reach the central square. We like to go straight here and explore the narrow street as it curves around to the left. Go left on Via Dei Sarti to go to the main square. When you come to a crossing street, Via Ricciarelli, go left for the main square. The square is marked by a sign for the angry Therese Moe.
