As far as caves go, this one is pretty impressive. This hike leads you along a stretch of the Arizona Trail to the end of a canyon where a deep tunnel into the rock wall awaits. This is a fun hike for families and it’s only moderately difficult. The elevation gain is gradual until the last quarter mile, where you’ll have to climb a rocky steep section. The tunnel is worth it, though! Expect moderate traffic on this route.

Tunnel via Arizona Trail Description

The Tunnel is a deep cave at the back of a canyon next to an interesting remnant of a stone wall. It reaches deep into the rock. This is a fun hike to take kids on, but adults will appreciate the spooky sigh just as much. You’ll follow a small section of the Arizona Trail on this hike, a thru-hike that extends from the border with Utah to the border with Mexico.

This hike is quite gradual until the last quarter mile, where the grade increases and you’ll contend with some rocky sections that may require some hands-on help. Good boots and poles will be helpful, but most groups make it up without much difficulty. Remember to bring plenty of water on this hike.

From the trailhead, go right to cross the East Verde River and take the Arizona Trail along the river into the canyon. You’ll cross over a couple of times, following the river to the end of the canyon. Look for the trail that ascends to the right. Scramble up the rocky last section before you find the cave. Go in only as far as you dare before retracing your steps back to the trailhead.
