Saddle Mountain to Mormon Grove is a 9.8mi point-to-point trail near Sunflower. This route is very lightly trafficked, so pick it if you want to hike all day without seeing anyone. Since this is a longer point-to-point hike, you can certainly do just a portion of it. We find the end near Saddle Mountain to be the more scenic one, but check it out and see what part’s your favorite.
Getting there
One of the trailheads for the Saddle Mountain to Mormon Grove hike is on SR 87 and the other is on FR 25.

The hike from Saddle Mountain to Mormon Grove is a very quiet trip with desert and mountain views for miles. Since it’s a longer point-to-point trail, try doing just a portion of it, or use it for a multi-day trip. It offers the flexibility to DIY your own adventure depending on your starting point. We love this hike in the springtime when the desert is blooming.
Note that this route suffers from overgrowth in the summer and fall after the rainy season. You’ll want long pants and maybe even some clippers to keep the going smooth. Bring plenty of water on this hike and avoid hiking it during the heat of the day.
One of the trailheads is partway up Saddle Mountain near FR 25. You can reach this trailhead using the Little Saddle Mountain guide if needed. The trail travels down through a canyon to flat ground, following near the highway into Sunflower. Users report preferring the end of the trail near Saddle Mountain, so consider starting there and turning back when you’re ready.
