Difficulty Rating:
Pinal Peak via Pioneer Pass is a 4.8mi out and back hike in the Tonto National Forest that leads you up to the highest point in the Pinal Mountains, Pinal Peak. The scenery is nice, the hike is just challenging enough, and you’ll likely encounter few fellow hikers as you soak up the views. We recommend coming prepared with extra layers of clothing, especially in the shoulder season. It can be snowy and windy at the peak. Additionally, make sure you have a map on hand as cell reception on this hike is poor or nonexistent for most. Finally, bring lots of water!

Pinal Peak via Pioneer Pass Description
Pinal Peak is the highest point in the Pinal Mountains, so it’s a great pick if you want to enjoy a high-up viewpoint. The perk is that this hike sees relatively little traffic. If you can time your hike for the autumn color change, you’ll be in for an extra treat. Come prepared with lots of water, extra layers for the top, and a map in case you start to lose your way.
From the trailhead, begin your trek through the pine forest. About halfway through, the foliage drops off and you’ll see the view open up. It’s a fairly consistent climb, although the middle third of the hike is the most demanding aside from the final climb to the summit.
From the top, admire East Mountain and Signal Peak beside you. When you’re ready, you’ll descend the same way you came up.
