Phon D Sutton Peak Loop Description
If you like remote feeling desert hikes with tons of wildlife to spot, the Phon D Sutton Peak Loop definitely needs to be on your list. Users report seeing Gila monsters, quail, rattlesnakes, and more on this hike. The best part? In September, this route is often a haven for butterflies. More species and more butterflies than you’ll believe!
This hike is very sandy and gravelly, so consider the footing when choosing which shoes to wear. Additionally, it can get extremely hot on this route, so bring plenty of water and avoid adventuring in the heat of the day.
From the trailhead, the loop traces the peak in front of you in addition to a small butte north of it. You can hike the loop either way. There are two junctions to mind: on the west side of the loop near the butte, don’t follow the route that heads directly west and then north. Second, another trail intersects the route on the east side. Go straight through this junction. Look for a great view of Dome Mountain when you’re halfway through the hike.
