Ben Starav and Glas Bheinn Mhòr Walk Description
The Ben Starav and Glas Bheinn Mhòr Walk ascends to unreal Highland scenery, where blue bodies of water carve through a collection of grassy peaks. However, reaching these up-high views of the rugged landscape below will require traversing through bogs, rocky and steep sections, and minor scrambling. Bring lots of water and snacks to refuel as you walk—you’re going to need it! We also recommend this walk to experienced hillwalkers first and foremost. It’s a challenging adventure, that’s for sure.
To start the Ben Starav and Glas Bheinn Mhòr Walk, look for the path signed ‘Hill path’ to cross River Etive. After, you’ll begin to head uphill through boggy terrain before departing the main path to go up Ben Starav’s north ridge. Look back for incredible views of Glen Etive! Walk along the spine, navigating rocks, boulders, and a narrow section before reaching the summit at 3537ft. Soak in Loch Etive shimmering below!
After, go beyond the summit and follow the bending ridge. This part can be tricky to find, so we definitely recommend bringing a GPS along! You’ll soon reach a narrow ridge—take care here. Follow it towards Stob Coire Dheirg. From here, ignore the false ridge heading north and steer right to go towards the col. At the col, continue walking east along the ridge, following some undulations before the final climb to the second Munro, Glas Bheinn Mhòr. After stopping at the summit (3271ft), go down the path along the east ridge, veering left before dipping to a bealach. At the bealach, go left to go down the glen. Stay to the right of the stream, and eventually, you’ll meet up with the same path you started on, as this is a lollipop route.
