Route Description for Viel del Pan Marmolada
From Via Pareda take the Cable Car to Pecol and from there take the Cable Car to Col dei Rossi – Bellavista. The path (Path #601) starts from there.
Once out of the cable car, you will be amazed by the view in front of you: Sassolungo massif, Marmolada, Sella Towers, Pordoi and Catinaccio. It’s a plethora of peaks, all laid out in front of you.
Follow the sign for Viel del Pan. The path is quite flat, with some easy ups and downs. You are heading away from the cable car, initially towards Rifugio Belvedere di Canazei. From here continue along the path to Rifugio Fredarola, which is about 20 minutes from the top of the cable car. The views in all directions are stunning!
Continue on the path and come to another rifugio, this time it’s Rifugio Viel del Pan. As you continue on the path you will start to see your destination, the Lago di Fedaia. Go on until you see a path with wood and earthen steps going down. Go down until you arrive at Lake Fedaia, this stunning lake at the base of Marmolada is incredible. You may recognize this lake from the movie “The Italian Job”.
There are regular buses back to Canazei, though at times the wait can be up to 2 hours. Check the schedule and if you have a wait enjoy a refreshment and the view from Rifugio Castiglioni Marmolada.
Insider Hints
Check information in advance about the cable car working hours and the bus hours.
Marmots and crows are very common around here. You may also see some shy deer crossing the fields.
This path was once used by the flour and bread merchants to go from one valley to another because centuries ago - until late 1800's - the woods were considered to be dangerous places.
Marmolada is the highest mountain in Italy, and is referred to as the Queen of the Dolomites. The views are incredible, and we love just enjoying the views.
