Route Description for Lagazuoi to Passo Falzarego

Take the Falzarego-Lagazuoi gondola up the mountain, avoiding the elevation gain. You’ll notice that you already have some incredible views before even starting the hike.

You’re hike technically starts from the Rifugio Lagazuoi. You can enjoy the Rifugio for a spell if you like, but we recommend checking out the peak first.

From the cable car, head uphill, on a clear path leading northwest off the left side of the Rifugio. This Sienteri Italia should take you up along the ridge of Lagazuoi. You’ll have stunning views all along here. There is one section near the start that does require you to use your hands for balance, so be careful.

Once you’ve savoured the views walk back to the Rifugio and treat yourself to one of the best strudels you’ll ever have. The Rifugio Lagazuoi has great food, and many people come here just for a meal. If you grab an espresso with your strudel, you’ll be in heaven.

Then, when you’re satisfied, you’ll walk past the Rifugio and go east. This path should take you to the WWI forts and tunnels. We’re not big on tunnels, so we just have a look at them, before following the clear path that goes down towards the valley.

You now descend the mountain using one of the ski runs. Do not descend the path below the gondola, this is scrambly and not suitable as an easy hike. We love the views to the north as we descend. You’re going towards the saddle of Lagazuoi, past Forcella Travenanzes. From there keep your eyes out for path number 401-402. That path will lead you down the ski slope and back to the start of the gondola. The views of the peaks around you at the start of the trail are pretty remarkable. Your trail should easily lead you back to the gondola.

Insider Hints

  • You can make this a very family friendly hike by taking the gondola up, enjoying the views, the tunnels, and the strudel and then taking the gondola back down as well.

  • There are some challenging trails that require the use of hands and have exposure that come down past the summit of Lagazuoi as well as below the Cable Car. Make sure you know what path you are on. We prefer the easier route that follows the ski path.

This was a good hike, a bit easier than the other two I've done in the Dolomites. I preferred the other two though. I think the views weren't as spectacular as I got used to in this area.
