Arlington Reservoir Walk Description

The Arlington Reservoir Walk takes you on a peaceful stroll through open fields and pastures that house many different species. You will have to navigate through several gates, kissing gates, footbridges, and three stiles on this walk. There are many sheep in this area, so if you are walking your dog, be sure to carry a lead. This area can get muddy after heavy rainfall, so be prepared with proper footwear.

This walk allows you to experience nature and to be amongst many different animals and birds. Birdwatching is excellent in this part of South Downs National Park, and many people come for an afternoon of sightseeing. This area is also a great spot to bring your dog for the day to frolic in the fields—just ensure you have a lead in case there are many animals around.

Beginning at the Berwick Station, turn left and continue along the road, and when you arrive at Berwick Garage and Berwick Stores, turn right to follow the path. Pass through a gate and follow the path to a telegraph pole, where you will find a gate. Navigate the gate and head out in the open field. You will come across a small bridge, which you will go through to follow the uphill path along the field’s edge. You will see a fence that follows the field’s edge; continue along this until you reach another gate—go through it.

You will come upon a driveway, which will lead you down to the Reservoir. Continue through the gate, and you will be on top of the Dam Wall that was finished in 1971. The Arlington Reservoir is the water supply for many villages. Move on along the path, and you will see Bird Hides, which houses many bird species and provides an excellent opportunity for sightings. When you finish here, continue on, passing through multiple gates and stiles that run along fields.

You will pass Mays Cottage and Farms and navigate another two gates, which will bring you to Ludlay Farm. Navigate another gate, a stile, and a kissing gate, and pass a few barns along the path until you reach the beginning of the walk at Berwick Station.
